What this means for your venue
Short version: you've got the paperwork most venues ask for.
Theatres, halls, schools, churches and event sites often ask for fire test results before drapes go up. Our reports cover the two Australian Standards they usually want to see: AS 1530.2 and AS/NZS 1530.3.
In NSW, the National Construction Code sets a limit for curtains in public areas of theatres, halls and similar venues. The fabric must score 6 or less on the AS 1530.2 flammability test. Ours scored 2.
Rules differ between states and venues. The easiest move is to send the reports to the venue, or to whoever signs off on the building's fire safety, and let them confirm.
Flame retardant doesn't mean fireproof. Give drapes clearance from stage lights, heaters, pyrotechnics and anything else that runs hot.

How we tested it
Who did the testing
We engaged AlfaTest, a testing company in Salisbury, Brisbane, to run the project. They sent our fabric to AWTA Product Testing in Melbourne, part of the Australian Wool Testing Authority. AWTA's lab is accredited by NATA, the national body that checks testing labs follow the standards properly.
What we tested
Black woven velvet, 100% polyester, 300 grams per square metre and 0.8mm thick.
The fabric is flame retardant by design. The flame resistance is built into the polyester fibre, not sprayed on afterwards, so it won't wash out like a coating can.

Will the flame retardancy wash out?
No. It's built into the polyester fibre, so it won't wash out like a sprayed-on coating can.

Is this the same as a theatre fire curtain?
No. A theatre fire curtain (also called a fire safety curtain) is a special system that drops between the stage and the audience during a fire. Our drapes are for backdrops and stage dressing.

Yes. Our black 300gsm stage drape is made from flame retardant polyester. It has been tested to AS 1530.2 and AS/NZS 1530.3 by an independent, accredited lab.

Often, yes. Many venues, schools and councils ask for fire test results before drapes go up. In NSW theatres and halls, it's a building code requirement. If you're not sure, ask the venue before you book your gear.

AS 1530.2 holds a flame to a hanging strip of fabric and measures how far the flame climbs. AS/NZS 1530.3 puts the fabric near intense heat and checks whether it catches fire, spreads flame, gives off heat or makes smoke. Thin fabrics like drapes should be tested to both, so we did both.
